I know it can feel kind of intimidating to pick what to wear for pictures you'll have forever. Here are a few guidelines I’ve put together so you can still make sure the images are focused on your love, and not necessarily what you’re wearing. Full disclaimer, I don’t know much about fashion. I wear my husbands sweaters and socks with sandals on the daily so there’s a good chance you’ve got better style than I do! This is just what I’ve found to work best from trial and error from past shoots, they’re only guidelines, not rules!

In the end, I want you to look like yourselves. Don’t feel like if you don’t follow these guidelines that your photos are going to suck. The most important thing is that you feel confident. As well as looking like yourselves, how you normally dress, so you can be as comfortable as possible! Bring stuff you normally wear, stuff that’s already in your closet that you love and feel yourselves in. Your favorite flowy dress? Amazing. An old band t-shirt and maternity jeans? Perfect. A lot of my couples will go shopping for “nicer” looking clothes which is absolutely okay, but sometimes they regret not just wearing what they feel themselves in.
Now this doesn’t mean everyone has to match 100%. You want to complement each other’s outfits by choosing colors that work well together (see "Neutrals and Earth Tones"). I find that if everyone is wearing the same colors/patterns, people will all tend to blend in together and there won’t be too much pop and life to the images. There is a big difference between coordinating and matching!
The beauty of wearing neutrals is that they all pair together. Because they don’t compete with each other, you’ll have no problem pairing any pieces together. Neutral colors include shades of black, white, ivory, cream, and gray. Earth tones include colors like sage and olive greens, burnt orange, sand, and shades of blue including navy and denim.
If you want your subject and attire to be the focus of your photos, keep accessories to a minimum. Too many will take away the spotlight from you or your outfit. If you have an accessory that makes a statement, minimizing your other accessories, as well as keeping your clothing patterns simple, will allow it to stand out.
Think about the conditions and locations we are going to be shooting in and plan around it. If we are going to be walking, bring shoes that are comfortable with good grip. If we are shooting on a beach, it may look weird if you’re wearing shoes (barefoot is always timeless). If it’s freezing cold outside, bring lots of layers and warm clothes with wool socks and boots. If it’s going to be hot, bring clothes that can breathe more so you you're not overheating. Be as comfortable as you can be!
Avoid loud and crazy patterns. The more subtle, the better! If the pattern is too loud, it will distract from your faces. Avoid heavy amounts of white and neon colors as they tend to be distracting as well. Textures evoke specific moods. Silk lends a luxurious vibe to any outfit. A plaid flannel can look cozy with corduroy, but it becomes more serious when paired with a black leather jacket. Denim is a casual texture you can use to dress down other fabrics. Denim, cotton fabric, leather, and suede are some of the most basic textures that play well with other textures. Neutral textures that are smaller and less visible to the naked eye pair well with more attention-grabbing textures.
Props don’t have to be cheesy! Props could just be as simple as your ultrasound picture. Or they could be a picnic, a motorcycle or a truck/car, your beloved and cherished pets, etc. If you have props you want to incorporate, let me know and we can make sure to incorporate them in a non-cheesy way!
